3Rivers Race Report
The gig rowing competitive season got underway on Sunday the 7th March with the 3 Rivers Race held by Caradon Gig Club at Saltash Sailing Club. The race is always a gruelling one, being the first of the year and over a very demanding course but this year the weather played a large part with a bitter easterly wind and a strong ebbing tide making it an even more of a challenge.
The club entered a Ladies crew and a Mens crew, rowing Ginette, which was very kindly rowed down from Weir Quay that morning and back again by a support crew, leaving at 7.30am!! Many thanks to those who volunteered as delivery crew!!
The Ladies, in heat 1, did not get the best of starts, finding themselves with no clear water to row in but once away held their position well out to the first turn, staying with the pack for the duration of the race, and giving Morlader a run for her money. Overall the Ladies finished in 24th position from a field of 38, in a time of 62.01mins.
The Mens crew had a more favourable start and like the Ladies maintained their position well throughout the race. They finished overall in joint 20th out of 36 entrants in a time of 56.48mins.
The Ladies said they were pleased with their performance despite rough conditions
against a fast flowing tide and strong winds. Tom Sargeant was fair frozen stiff
after coxing the ladies and had to go for a warm-

Bere Ferrers Social Club was packed to capacity at the Tamar & Tavy Gig Club’s Annual Presentation Evening on Saturday 16th January. Special thanks go to local Celtic band ‘Commoner’s Muck’ who entertained us all evening with their lively mix of Irish Folk music, and Social Secretary Jane Morton, who did a sterling job in organising everyone which cumulated in an excellent selection of food.
The Club was formed in 2003 after Bob Turner’s dream of providing a Traditional Cornish Gig for the Local Community materialised, so it was therefore fitting that Bob, founder member & President of the Tamar & Tavy Gig Club, presented the awards.
Award winners were:
Ladies, Jo Cameron
Men, Mike Barnes
Best Newcomer, Chrissy Venning
Veterans, Rae Bullough
Club Member of the Year Award, Rob Dawe
Juniors, David Walker
Chairman’s Award, Rod Atkins & Rae Bullough
And finally, Loveday Fethney who won the coveted Golden Thole Pin Award which is awarded for the best comic or bizarre moment of 2009.

The Relaunch of Ginette!
In beautiful sunshine on Sat 27th of Feb, Ginette was finally re launched after her winter maintenance was completed earlier in the week. The first crew to christen her was the Ladies 3 Rivers Race crew, keen to get some real rowing practice in before the race on the 7th March. Tamar has still needs some more painting done before she too will be re launched ready for the hard season ahead.
Training crew-
The Ladies 3 Rivers Crew will be as above with Jenny Young and Julie Rendell in place of Chrissy and Trisha.
The weather for the mens session held the next day was not so favourable. Strong winds with a few heavy showers and a fast flowing tide made for hard rowing conditions, but it was well attended and gave the mens crew a chance to get their act together ready for their 3 Rivers Race on Sunday.
The Mens 3 Rivers Race Crew-
I’m sure I speak for all the club in wishing our 2 crews all the best for Sunday and hope that they put all their hard training into action!!
‘12 Across and 2 Down’ Charity walk.
A Team of 12 members from the club entered the annual 12 Across and 2 Down moorland walk in aid of the Dartmoor Rescue Group on February 21st. The walk started from Vennford Reservoir following the ‘ancient track’ along the Maltern Way taking in 14 stone crosses and finished some 10 (as the crow flies so more like 14!) miles later at Princetown.

Tamar & Tavy’s Scilly Weekend
8 crews made their way to the Scilly Islands last weekend for the annual World Pilot Gig Championships. The competition was fiercer than ever with over 130 gigs registered for the event.
Friday night saw the Veteran crews fighting for places in fields of 46 for the ladies and 62 for the men. All our crews achieved their best ever placings, with both the men’s and ladies A crews coming in halfway up the field.
Saturday provided the fantastic spectacle of the ladies and men’s seeding races, with 120 gigs on the start line, racing for over 1 ½ miles from St Agnes to St Marys. The ladies A crew flew over the finish line in 64th place, with the men’s A achieving 79th position.
Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning was spent fighting to move up the ratings in
heats of 12. Sunday involved rowing to the start line at Nut Rock on Tresco in a
force 4-
The final results were that the Ladies A and the Men’s B crews finished 4th in their respective groups, Men’s A were 7th, and Ladies B 6th. A fine achievement that all should be proud of.
